Jakarta, 12/12 - Have you ever shared someone's phone number without their permission? If yes, maybe you should be more careful. It is because phone numbers are classified as personal data, and the regulation of Data Privacy Protection is already implemented. So is this important for us to really understand this?

Personal Data is a series of data about someone that can be identified individually or combined with any other data, both directly and indirectly. Data Privacy Protection means an end-to-end efforts to protect the data in all processing sequences, to secure constitutional rights of the subject of Data Privacy.

Data Privacy can be classified into two categories. First is General Data Privacy which directly and indirectly leads us to someone's identity such as name, address, email, phone number, and so on. Second is Specific Data Privacy which refers to specific information about someone, such as financial records, criminal track records, and medical history.

According to the regulation, Data Privacy can be processed by the determined steps. It starts from Data Privacy gathering and the data owner should approve the process. Once approved, the data can be processed and analyzed to a specific information. Afterward, the information must be saved according to its purpose and be determined by its retention period.

If there is any mistaken or updated information, the Data Privacy needs to be updated and prior to it being used. Once the information update has completed, it can be saved by its usage period. After the usage period is over, the information must be destroyed.

In relation to our previous discussion on phone number sharing, it would be wise for us to be more careful. Make sure the phone number owner agrees their number to be shared for any purpose. A breach of this regulation brings legal impact because under the current Data Privacy Protection Law, you are subject to jail sentence up to 6 years or fine up to Rp 5 billion for the misconduct.
