History of Credit Card and Its Impact on The Payment Systems

Jakarta, 13/03 - Talking about payment systems, one of the most popular methods is the usage of credit cards. Besides for any urgent or emergency matters, some people prefer to use it for installment payment. But do you know that the credit payment system was found because of an accidental moment?
The credit payment model was started by John Biggins, banker of Flatbush National Ban of Brooklyn, USA, in 1946. He issued a card called Chang-It to do any credit transaction, bun only valid on closed entities and limited to merchants that already registered as customers of the bank.
The first usage of credit cards in general was done by Frank McNamara, founder of Diners Club. In 1949, Frank had dinner to entertain his client in a fancy restaurant. Somehow, he forgot to bring his wallet, and fortunately his wife was able to pay the bills. Ashamed moment, but inspires him to create a multifunction card that can be used for transactions.
The card called Diners Club was officially launched in 1950 and just in three years already had more 40.000 customers, and the usage was spreading to Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. The phenomenon encouraged American Express to make their own credit card, with PVC materials that were used until now. The massive credit literacy in 1960 also skyrocketed the customers of credit cards, and pushed the US government to regulate the credit card by 1970.
In Indonesia, the first credit card came in 1980 that was introduced by Duta Bank, in cooperation with VISA and MasterCard. The user of the credit card was only the customer of Duta Bank, and came from specific wealthy people such as businessmen, politicians, and other high-end class society. Also, the card was quite hard to get since it can only be owned by a limited group.
However now the ownership of credit cards in Indonesia has become easier and the usage keeps growing. Besides providing convenience for customers to have transactions, credit card service to reach more potential customers. Moreover, it also can make the business owner orderly set up their finances.
