Jakarta, 11/10 - Are you the kind of person who frequently looks over charging spots in public space? For now, you better be more vigilant if you are that kind person in public spaces such as airports or shopping centers. Currently, there’s a widespread trick that data theft method came from a charging station, called Juice Jacking.
Juice jacking terms were introduced at the international hacker conference named DEFCON 2011. The data theft methods conducted by infusing malware on the targeted charging station. By utilizing USB ports, the method was conducted to hack a gadget that was already connected to the charging station.
The hacking medium executed with two devices; port USD and USB cable. By juice jacking, a hacker will be able to abuse the connected devices to steal targeted data on the gadget. What makes us worry, it seems very hard to recognise whether a charging station is already infected or not by certain people.
But for sure the methods would be able to be prevented if we act prudently. One of the major indications there’s any stealing attempt to our device by carefully looking over our device at the very first connection. If there’s any pop-up notification showing to ask our permission to transfer data, most likely the station is already infected with malware.
The most secure way to recharge your phone is of course by using the default adaptor. In case of emergency, make sure that your USB only functions as a charger, and is unable to transfer data. In other cases, once you are connected and any pop-up notification like “Share Data” and “Charger Only”, choose the “Charge Only” option.
